Doctors who carried out an x-ray on a 20-year-old woman after she had suffered from a permanent stomach ache for six months, despite trying various medications, were amazed to discover a fountain pen wedged inside her. Doctors at the hospital in Taipei discovered the fountain pen after they agreed to x-ray student Shing Fang when she complained of unbearable pain. She told doctors that she had also been diagnosed with depression about the fact that her GP had been unable to solve the problem, and that in the last few weeks the pain had become unbearable meaning that she couldn't eat properly or concentrate on her studies. But when doctors carried out an endoscopy by inserting a camera through her mouth into her stomach, there were amazed to discover along thin object badly corroded by stomach acid that was wedged inside her. After ordering x-ray, there were shocked to discover that the 10 centimetre long object was apparently a fountain pen that are probably been there for at least half a year. The doctors said that they had operated immediately to remove the pen, and warned that if it had been there any longer, it could well have led to peritonitis, or even death. As to how the pen got there, the young woman said she had no memory at all of swallowing it but agreed that it might well have been swallowed after drinking too much to celebrate doing well in an exam some six months previously.
